Pixels pixels… dear pixels. They are a symbol of digital era, especially after computer games got popular by public. Since then, games went 3D and quality of graphics skyrocketed… but this pixel-retro style is returning nowdays. And this time it does not stay only at computer screen!

Modern designers made multiple attempts to incorporate pixel-like graphics into everyday life. From architecture to interior design. Don’t you believe? Check out this one:

Picture above is fancy seating, which will definitely catch attention. While it may be not suitable for common housing, it may be very eye-catching in themed interiors. I know what you are saying now… hey, but this is not anything ancient!

Let’s travel in time

Surprisingly, squared design patterns is wide-spread across the world. From western countries, up to the far east. Luckily, many ancient and old buildings or traditional patterns you can be found right now are decorated like this. Anywhere in the world. To be specific, did you know in Iran you can very easily find those? Yes… Iran – The ancient Persia.

As you can see, this ancient Persian design looks very decent, rich and powerful. It is beautiful, and makes WOW impression on you. And everybody that ever been in Iran, can tell, that this square-style is not anything rare to see.

If you ever been traveling in eastern Europe, it is not hard to spot the same square like designs. If you seen none, just visit some traditional restaurants, visit museums or google for a traditional dresses. This pattern is from Ukraine in eastern Europe.

Pattern above, or similar patterns can be observer on traditional shirts, especially below the neck. The very similar patterns you can find in neighbor countries. This time decoration is located on traditional shirts, on the arms and sleeves. Picture is taken from Slovakia’s national collection:

Pretty cool, isn’t it? You can notice, this time tailors used combination of bigger pixels and smaller pixels this time. Unluckily for pixel perfectionists, this causes to look shirt design less uniformly.

Luckily for us, many of this traditional ornamentation is returning into fashion. From time to time you can spot shops which are specializing in traditional, or traditionally inspired square designs, but on t-shirts or hoodies. Time will show if it will get more mainstream or not.

Let’s get casual

While in the past, artists and craftsmen mostly used squares as decorative ornamentation, pixel artists do the same, but not always. Mostly, pixel artists are trying to create images using pixels – Choosing right pixels they created non-abstract images, characters, etc. And this is where thing get interesting. Similar concept tried artists from Berlin in one of Berlin’s subway

Just walk in this subway in reminds you 8-bit games. It was very pleasant, especially when it comes to place itself… if you take a closer look, you can see depiction of Berlin’s Brandenburg gate, as well as another significant places of Berlin.

Imagine, tiles like this would be used in bathrooms or rooms, where tiles are very much in use. It could lead to beautiful and pleasantly decorated places… but please do not overdo it! Nobody likes visuals with too much color.
